JUDGING CRITERIA
Description of performance for ride assessment :
OPEN DIVISION
The emphasize in this division will be for modern high performance
surfing.
All and any type of board can be ridden. However the surf riding
tight to the breaking lip using quick pronounced moves in and
around the curl will be rewarded with the highest score.
Surfing inside the tube is definitely allowed!
Length of ride is a factor in scoring. When used to demonstrate
control and the ability to link up sections of the breaking wave,
this style of surfing will be seen favorable in the judge's
assessment of the ride. However once the surfer is reduced to a
groan situation in the white water with there being no further
prospect in the wave value, any further length of ride would have
little impact on the total score of the wave. If the surfer is
able to continue to perform defined maneuvers in the white water,
this length of ride would be still considered in the assessment of
the ride.
The judge should consider the quality and control of the moves of
the surfer. Fast, racking moves with quick directional changes are
favored and the use of these to link up the length of the wave
will rewarded the highest . Completed, inside the tube maneuvers
combined into the ride will receive maximum points.
LONG BOARD DIVISION
This division in restricted to Malibu style surfboards and must be
over 8'0" (measured along the bottom line) in length.
The emphasis on the riding criteria is for traditional long board
surfing where the rider uses the maneuvers to trim the board. The
methods used to trim the board are Turing combined with tail
stalls and walking up and back the length of the board. This
should always demonstrate the rider's control and the ability to
hold the possible around the breaking section of the wave. These
maneuvers should also be used the utilize the maximum length of
the ride and the ability to combine these traditional moves, would
be seen most favorable when considering the assessment of the
ride.
Style is always of high consideration with Malibu surfing and the
surfer most able to demonstrate moves such as cross step walking
on the board as opposed to shuffling up and down the board will be
more highly assessed.
Whilst modern moves are also part of Malibu surfing, the surfer
who can use the breaking lip and tight curl line to set up nose
ride should be most favored.
As with any form of surfing the ability to control and complete
tube rides within the rest of the criteria is most highly
assessed.
Length of ride is of importance and once a rider is reduced to a
mere groan , any further length of the ride will have little
impact in the total score of the wave.
